About the Author
Robert N. Lussier is a professor of management at Springfield College. He has been teaching management courses for more than 25 years. He has a national and international reputation for his methods for applying concepts and developing skills that can be used both personally and professionally. A prolific writer, Dr. Lussier has more than 400 publications to his credit, including Management Fundamentals 6e (Sage), Human Relations 8e (McGraw-Hill), Leadership 6e (South Western/Cengage), and others. He has also published in top tier academic journals including Journal of Management Education, Journal of Business and Entrepreneurship, and Journal of Business Strategy. Lussier holds a bachelor of science in business administration from Salem State College, master's degrees in business and education from Suffolk University, and a doctorate in management from the University of New Haven. He served as founding director of Israel Programs and has taught courses in Israel.

I felt this book was a good resource. It presented so many leadership styles and situations to utilize them in. If anyone else is looking for a book that will help prepare them for new age management, this is one to keep.

Good text for Human Relations class.

I purchased this book for a class on Human Relations. I felt it was a very good text. It really covered the subject matter well. I did not feel as if I had to go outside the text much for additional information when preparing a presentation for my class on negotiation. Others in the class felt it supported the topics they had to present on as well such as emotional intelligence and assertiveness.

I would have save time and money if it was stated clearer, in a separate category on what edition the book was instead of in the title. That happens with the majority of the orders and you are not aware of that until you get it. It would be very helpful it this was taken in consideration. I scroll through all of the information as closely as I can view, no less put in the edition type I'm looking for with no help at times. I thought this one was the latest issue because it said it was new and then in condition section, it was very good. Some teachers will let you get a couple of editions dated before but this was a 4th when I needed an 8th. The time received was a plus but it didn't do any good when I have to send it back and try to find if another is still available.

Francamente la autora debió para en Divergente. Insurgente y Leal son dos novelas sin sentido, con personajes accesorios desdibujados, sin una trama clara y con cientos de páginas de relleno. Como a muchos lectores, el final me pareció innecesariamente fatal y sin ninguna lección de por medio. Muchas lagunas en la historia, muchos hilos sueltos. Lo rescatable de Leal es haberle dado voz propia a los dos personajes principales, narrando las situaciones desde cada perspectiva. Me incluyo en la lista de lectores que se quedaron sin ganas de leer más de Veronica Roth.

This popular textbook offers a comprehensive and practical introduction to central themes in the principles and practice of teaching English as a foreign/second language. It is written both for teachers and for those taking professional courses in English language teaching.

The first part is focused on the principles on which current methods and materials are based and explores such topics as educational frameworks, the communicative approach, post-communicative trends in syllabus and materials design, and the evaluation and adaptation of materials. Part II relates these principles to individual language skills. It shows how theories concerned with the development of reading, speaking, listening and writing have affected the design and use of teaching materials. The final part of the book examines different methods available to teachers for organizing and managing the ELT classroom, and discusses group and pair work, individualization, classroom observation and the teacher's role in the contemporary ELT context.

About the Author
Jo McDonough is Senior Lecturer in ELT in the Department of Language and Linguistics at the University of Essex. She is the author of ESP in Perspective (1984) and Research Methods for English Language Teachers (with Steven McDonough, 1997).

Provo staged political and cultural interventions into the symbolic and everyday spaces of Holland from 1962–1967. In this first book-length English-language study of their history, Richard Kempton narrates the rise and fall of Provo from early Dutch “happenings” staged in 1962 to the “Death of Provo” in 1967. He chronicles Robert Jasper Grootveld’s anarchist anti-cancer campaign, the riots against Princess Beatrix’s marriage to an ex-Nazi, and the famous White Bicycle program. He also comments on parallel contemporary and near-contemporary movements (including Dada and Situationism), Amsterdam’s previous anarchist traditions, the spread of Provo through Holland and the development of the Kabouter party, and ends by offering an existentialist critique of Provo and other anarchist movements of the 1960s.

About the Author
Richard Kempton is a retired librarian living in Los Angeles. He lived in Amsterdam in the early 60s, and came to Provo in 1965 when his Dutch wife wrote a paper on Provo Speech for a class. Her interest inspired him to write this book because he couldn’t find one to read.

Excellent overview of the Dutch version of groups like Situationist International. So many of the student anarchist groups of the 1960s have had their early histories erased or ignored. I had to follow the pop culture breadcrumbs left by Jon Savage's *England's Dreaming*, and *The Situationist International Reader* to find out about Provo. The international rebellion of May 1968 rolled through countries from Italy and France to the US and Brazil. What's left of them are mostly artistic innovations. This book tells you more about what the political aspirations were about.

In the mid-1960s, a loose band of artists, hippies, and anarchists burst onto the political stage in the Netherlands. Known as the Provos (as in to provoke), they led a mini-rebellion against the established order that rattled elites and left behind an inspired legacy of anti-authoritarian activism.

Richard Kempton documents this legacy in his recently released, Provo: Amsterdam's Anarchist Revolt, the first book-length history of the group in English. He traces the emergence, highpoints, and decline of the Provos, in addition to providing tangential but interesting appendices on topics such as the relationship between the Provos and the Situationists, the history of anarchism in Amsterdam, and others. He does a good job at placing the group in the context of the radical currents from which it emerged and at relating the Provos' trajectory to some of the political peculiarities of the Netherlands. While a deeper examination of the group's ideas and internal organization would have enriched the book, I found it to be thoughtful, informative, and fun to read. Kempton illustrates the Provos' extraordinary ability to expose the contradictions of the liberal democratic society in which they lived while making authorities look absurd in the process. Of their many feats that he records, their "White Bicycle Plan" is surely the most famous. It began as a response to the traffic jams and air pollution plaguing Amsterdam: instead of passively accepting the automobile's toxic domination of urban life, the Provos pressed the municipal government to give out vast numbers of unlockable, white bikes throughout the city. These cycles-easily identifiable due to their color-would be available to any passerby who felt like riding one. He or she could take it to his or her destination but, once there, would be obliged to leave it for other citizens. This ingenious plan was clearly a sensible, low-cost, and environmentally friendly way to meet at least some of Amsterdam's transportation needs.

The Provos distributed fifty bikes at their own expense to jump start the program but immediately ran into problems with the police, who objected to their attempt to socialize the means of transportation. In fact, the cops impounded the bikes furnished by the Provos on the pretext that doling out unlocked bicycles "encouraged theft." In other words, they took bicycles to prevent them from being taken!

The Provos were naturally delighted to find the police offering Amsterdamers such a concrete lesson in the bankruptcy of the criminal justice system: thanks to their unintentional complicity in the Provos' scheme, the city became a classroom in which attentive residents could learn a lesson normally buried in obscure anarchist pamphlets and disquisitions: the cops' primary objective is not to serve the people but rather to protect the status quo, no matter how noxious and irrational it might be.

The "White Bicycle Plan" was one among multiple Provo "plans," all designed to push people toward cooperative, ecological solutions while undermining the legitimacy of the established order. They outlined many of these in a brochure entitled What the Provos Want , which they released in 1966, shortly before successfully competing for a seat on Amsterdam's City Council ("Vote Provo for a Laugh!" was one of their campaign slogans). Kempton summarizes key points:

* The White Bicycle Plan: In an effort to address traffic congestion in the center of the city, white bicycles would become the common property of all the people of Amsterdam. Automobiles would be excluded from the center of the city.
* The White Chimney Plan: A mandate that chimneys have special built-in incinerators to combat air pollution; with fines for infractions.
* The White Chicken Plan: Amsterdam's police force should be recast as unarmed friendly social workers with candy and band-aids in their pockets.
* The White Dwelling Plan: In an effort to ease the city's housing shortage the city government would publish a weekly list of empty buildings so people without homes could squat them.
* The White Wives Plan: Developed by Irene Donner-Van der Wetering, this plan called for sex education for young people. Among other things it mandated information on contraception, medical clinics for young girls, and teaching family planning.
* The White Schools Plan: Students would have a say in expanding opportunities for democratically organized study and discussion.
* The White City Plan: Amsterdam would become the first urban area committed to implementing Constant Nieuwenhuis's New Babylon.(1)

After reading these "plans," I found myself surprised to realize that today, approximately forty years later, many of their demands ("plans") have become non-controversial elements of mainstream social policy. For example, numerous cities have experimented with free bicycle programs (such as Portland, Madison, and Barcelona), and bike paths and restrictions on vehicular traffic are common in American cities. Likewise, controls on air pollution are pervasive; young people often receive some degree of sex education; and students frequently play a role in setting academic policy at the college and sometimes high school level. Obviously, aspects of their program remain unrealized-I know of no city that publishes lists of squatable buildings, for instance-but, nonetheless, much of the Provo platform has lost its controversial, provocative quality.

This raises a difficult question about the meaning of the Provos' legacy. What if the Provos (and corresponding groups like the Yippies in the United States) ultimately need to be understood less as anarchist instigators than as the avant-garde of a more lenient, culturally flexible, and ecologically friendly capitalism? While it's true that they set stodgy authorities into a frenzy four decades ago, it may be that those authorities were simply anachronistic obstacles and that the Provos actually helped modernize capitalism by undermining their legitimacy.

Issues such as these are beyond the scope of Kempton's book and, for that matter, most works on the history of anarchism. However, I believe that they are worth pursuing and I hope that the publication of this long overdue book on the Provos indicates that a more serious, complicated engagement with our past is on the horizon.

Complete, albeit a little cumbersome.

Details everything that I have come to expect from Haynes manuals. The one gripe that I have is that it covers so many different model years and both 250cc and 400cc-making it slightly confusing whenever trying to read in a linear fashion. I almost feel like I have to highlight the applicable parts.

Great Homeschool AP Human Geography Text!

My 11th grade son used this text as his primary to self-study for the AP Human Geography test. He used it along with a study guide and earned a 5 on his AP Exam.

Decent--but Not cohesive...

My main gripe about this book is that it is organized in such a fashion that it makes it difficult to outline. The chapters don't develop in a manner that lends itself easily to straightforward interpretation of main ideas. Instead, the authors rely primarily on providing definitions of terms, and then presenting information that is of secondary consequence.

The book is informative, but not linearly coherent.

To address the issues raised by another reviewer about Islam, after some more scrupulous reading of those sections, I believe the reviewer let his anger get the best of him. For example, on the section dealing with the "Sour Grapes" reaction, he automatically combined the imposition of pork-eating taboos with the "sour grapes" reaction, which the authors clearly didn't do. They develop the idea and geographical importance of pork-eating, and gives the "sour grapes" reaction as a possible explanation to the eschewing of pork--and they offer others as well. The idea was to show that we don't know where it began, from a cultural stance. The author attaches from an early stage that eschewing pork was part of Judaism, a much older tradition than Islam or Christianity, and makes the point that the distribution of the taboo follows in line with areas that pork isn't easy to cultivate, since a nomadic lifestyle is not suitable for pork farming.

Note that this is different than saying "Islamic people made conquered peoples eschew pork because Islamic people were jealous of those who raised pork." This statement is almost nonsensical, but if you were to simplify the claim raised by the other reviewer, this is what you get.

Did later islamic kingdoms impose the non-eating of pork in the regions of Babylon and those cities near rivers? Yes they did. The author was wrong to use the language of "for revenge," as it puts a slightly moral stance on the books position, and does paint Islam in a negative light--which a good textbook shouldn't do.

And in dealing with the oft-violent histories of all three monotheist religions, the authors spent a great deal of time on the christian enslavement and mistreatment of Indians by the sword here in the Americas--showing that Christians did bad things in the name of their faith, just as Muslims did.

As far as religions go however, the treatment of buddhism and hinduism is even more sparse than it is on Islam, though I have yet to read a western-written book that covers eastern traditions in an interesting fashion. Most of them have a sudden style-shift from seeming interested in the subject matter to suddenly seeming more like an encyclopaedic regurgitation of well-known facts.

This book is guilty of this as well. Docked one star for its non-linear style, and one star for its poor treatment of eastern religions.

I give it 2 "horns" up

I am currently enrolled in Professor Terry Jordan-Bychkov's Cultural Geography class, and the book is basically a culmination of his travels all over the world. The majority of the pictures in the book were personally taken by Professor Jordan himself, and it makes the class even more interesting. Professor Jordan's love for Geography emulates throughout the entire book, and it is easy to read as a result. The book is set in very vivid outlines, so it is easy to follow, and each chapter builds upon one another to form the, in words frequently used by Professor Jordan, the "Human Mosiac." The book is intersting, easy reading, and the class is even better. For those of you former, future, or current Longhorns, I HIGHLY reccommend the class; for those of you who cannot have the opportunity to learn from such a brilliant and cultured man, the book is the next best thing

I would highly recommend this textbook to anyone interested in learning about the ...

As a beginner to programming, I found this book very helpful. Not only were the topics expressed clearly, there is also example code. Each example was fully explained in detail after the code. I would highly recommend this textbook to anyone interested in learning about the C language, or anyone who is looking for a better understanding of the C language. This textbook is a great introductory into programing in general and clearly helps you set up the formatting to start your code. There are also tips and best practices throughout the textbook, so you can really perfect and improve your coding style. New programming words for a beginners are bolded and clearly defined. There are practice problems where you can code, but the solutions are not in the book. If I ever needed a quick review of the C language this is definitely the book I would use. This book also occasionally references the C# language, which can get a bit confusing at times, but overall it's a great programming textbook for beginners. I used it for two classes and felt it was helpful for both. Along with that, I also felt the price for the textbook was reasonable.

Great Book! Worked for Me!

My first C++ programming course used the 8th edition of this textbook and I had no difficulty understanding any of the concepts taught in the book or any of the programming exercises I tried on my own. To ME, the authors explain everything in easy to understand language and give examples that are easy to follow if you take your time to think about what they're saying and synthesize the information. They don't hold your hand, but they don't teach you a little bit and then tell you to go do something where you have to figure out something that hasn't been taught at all - I hate that approach to teaching. I bought this book to refresh what I learned in class and to go past what we were able to cover. I got an A in my very first ever programming course, my very first time ever programming anything, so I give this book five stars.

Mediocre book with no improvements from 8th Edition - Will drain your enthusiasm

This book suffers from all the shortcomings of the 8th edition. I was first planning on doing a detailed review, but came to realize I would be repeating exactly what many readers pointed out in the previous editions. Besides, the authors don't care much to read them. The prudent reader would do well to read the reviews of the 8th edition to have an idea of what to expect at C++ How to Program (8th Edition).

For the sake of completeness, I will point of a few things.

You are looking at the most expensive book on C++ ever written, with nothing magical to show for that $110+ price [edit: with the fall semester underway, the price is now $135+]. We know books marketed as textbooks are targeted towards students who allegedly have deep pockets (from grants, parents' savings, or loans), hence the $100+ price tag. Simply put, it says a lot that the authors take part in this robbery. In comparison, a reference such as The C++ Programming Language by Stroustrup costs $54; C++ Primer Plus, by Prata and Stephen is a meager $38, while Effective C++ by Scott Meyers sits at $35. Their content far exceeds the quality and breadth of Deitel (though they are not formatted as textbooks). Furthermore, to make the biggest profits, the Deitel series churns out new editions at $100+ every other year, so that students can't purchase used copies for cheap from their graduating friends (exercises will mismatch). These morally despicable plays on the price of this book itself justify 2 stars off.

The chief issue with this book though is the incoherent wordiness used. At the time of this review, the publisher has chosen not to enable Amazon's "Click to Look Inside" (draw your own conclusions). So I can't point you to live examples (I will update this once they do). C++ is not an easy language to learn, so random wordiness is your enemy.

As an example, imagine being explained the difference between declaring a pointer ptr1 as { const int * ptr1 } vs. using { int * const ptr1 }. Both declarations are valid, and optional, but the difference is critical and a life-saver. But to explain this, the authors do not bother with short and sweet examples. Instead, they roll out paragraphs of frustrating text. If somehow you make it through those explanations, by the time you get to heavy concepts such as 'base class virtual constructors', the STL best practices, etc., this book will have you gouging your eyes out. Now some subjects deserve 1000 pages, but jumping around with lengthy explanations does disservice. Programming explained right is beautiful.

In addition, the layout of the book is atrocious: the authors use pages of code to demonstrate simple concepts, even in the first part of the book. Why not keep examples short and compile-worthy? That way the reader can type them, see what matters, change things around, and see what breaks. Instead of that, the lines of code never finish, and the reader has little incentive to type it all out (which is so important). Even worse, later chapters refer to lengthy examples listings in previous chapters (warning to Kindle readers).

Again, the reviews of the previous editions stand, so check them out. This book is dangerous for beginners because it risks discouraging them. The table of content, coloring, and the first chapter of the book are attractive. But things quickly unravel. I never heard of a professional using this book as a reference, and for the beginner, notice how even the 5-star reviews encourage this being a supplement instead. I would give it 3 stars if the price wasn't a bad joke.

-=-= If you have some options in choosing a book, here are my recommendations below -=-=-=-

If you are a true beginner and have to start at C++, pick up C++ Primer Plus (6th Edition) (Developer's Library). I question the wisdom of using C++ as you very first programming language (see the first comment to this review below), but hey, maybe you don't have a choice: C++ Primer Plus should serve you well then.

If you know a good bit how to program, but need to get up to speed on C++, I recommend Sams Teach Yourself C++ in One Hour a Day (7th Edition). I usually hate the "Teach yourself X in Y hours" trick, but this author nails it. You will be going dilly-dolly until you finish the book, without needing too much motivation. This book needs more coding exercices for beginners though, so I wouldn't recommend it as a first programming book.

If you need a complete reference, I recommend the powerhouse The C++ Programming Language, 4th Edition. The author wrote the C++ language, and knows what he is talking about.

If you know C++, but would like to learn a few cool tricks, Effective C++: 55 Specific Ways to Improve Your Programs and Designs (3rd Edition) does the job quite well.

There might be more out there, but these gets my vote.
