His scoring techniques have been covered often; for example, Laurence MacDonald, in The Invisible Art of Film Music: A Comprehensive History, identifies Steiner as a 'godfather of film music' and treats the composer as a continual focal point throughout the text. Wegele provides a biographical study of the composer along with a detailed analysis of his score for Casablanca. In the analysis, Wegele coordinates musical examples, script excerpts (noting prerecord and score events), film reel contents, and archival documentation. I hesitated for some time with regard to purchase due to the price. Authors and publishers should be compensated for their time and expertise, but relative to the market, the price seemed out of line. More like the grossly inflated prices of required text for most Universities. The writing and conclusions are good and informative. The musical samples are good, but the printed notation is annoyingly small and somewhat blurred. Only for serious Composers who recognize the importance of Steiner and the Golden Age in Hollywood.

Made My Coffee Snob Happy

My husband is not only the most difficult person to buy a present for but also a huge coffee snob. You've heard the song, "Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover," my husband has 50 ways to brew coffee. Cold press, press pot, drip, brew, etc. And he's tried a ton of coffees as well. He times things, checks the temperature of the water and has also used water from our well before it goes through any filtration or softening. So I was thrilled when I got this book and not only did he not ask to return it (yes, almost every present I get him) but he has said how much he loves this. He said it is very comprehensive and it covers so much from the bean to the roast, coffee brewing methods, etc. So I guess I win this one. Finally, after 20 years.

This is not a barista's guide book though it does have some information one should know if that is your profession.
I enjoy the beverage. I am no expert. I merely wanted to learn more about the plant and the product. The pictures are very nice as well.

A Very Misleading Title

This review concerns the original 1957 edition and the revised 1966 edition. The original and revised editions are essentially identical, the plot and the events are the same and the only differences are in the phrasing of a few sentences. Frank and Joe become involved in Mr. Hardy's top secret case when he sends them a note to look for "Hugo Purple Turban" which turns out to be a ventriloquist's dummy that has diamonds hidden in it's eyes. Eventually, Mr. Hardy asks Frank, Joe, Chet and Tony to go to Puerto Rico to assist him, but when they arrive, Mr. Hardy is missing. Personally, I think that the author tried too hard to make this book action packed and exciting, but alot of it is too coincidental and doesn't make sense. First of all, when Frank and Joe are first trying to find "Hugo Purple Turban", they go to see a fortuneteller named Hugo that Aunt Gertrude told them about and this man just happens to be a part of the gang they are after. Second, of all the shops in the U.S. that would carry ventriloquist's dummies "Hugo Purple Turban" just happens to get sent to a shop in Bayport. My biggest problem with this book is its title. The ghost and even Skeleton Rock play a very small part in this book and could easily have been eliminated without altering the story. The ghost isn't even mentioned until chapter 18. Some fans may love this book, but I didn't and any fan who reads this book expecting a story about a ghost is going to be sadly disappointed.

Fantastic book for younger boys.

I read this book at least a dozen times when I was a kid. I thought it was great then, and still do, 30 years later. I would rate this as my favorite kid's book of all time. Excellent plot with a lot of twists.
