Made all the difference to my agility in technology

This was recently purchased to give to a friend who was starting to teach math in a private secondary school. Entering my freshman year in Prep School years ago, I was inept in math... it made little sense to me, and seemed to have an arcane rules base. But I joined the "Math Club" and an energetic young faculty member just out of Yale used Polya, Whitehead and a third book entitled Mathematician's Delight I recall. All of a sudden the efficiency and beauty and philosophical base of math became apparent to me and I appreciated its elegance. This book contributed to a great transformation, where I went from math dunce to graduating from this school with top College Board Exam scores in math, and went on to be educated in engineering and astrophysics. I am now professor of Physics and Astronomy. Bottom line, this together with Whitehead and a third book, and an enthusiastic math teacher, became a real turning point for me, opening my potential for being an effective technologist.

About the Author
Diane Larsen-Freeman is Professor Emerita of Education, Professor Emerita of Linguistics, and Former Director of the English Language Institute at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She is also a Distinguished Senior Faculty Fellow at the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont. Dr. Larsen-Freeman has been a conference speaker in over 60 countries of the world and has published over 100 articles in her areas of interest. Her Heinle/Cengage titles include "The Grammar Book: Form, Meaning, and Use for English Language Teachers" (third edition, 2015, co-authored with Marianne Celce-Murcia), "From Grammar to Grammaring" (2003, authored), and the fourth edition of "Grammar Dimensions: Form, Meaning, and Use" (2007, Series Director). Beware - this is the same book as "The Hole" (which is very good)

Based upon what I have seen at this site, and some others, "After the Hole" is the same book as The Hole

Do a Google Search on "After the Hole" and you'll see that it is the same book as "The Hole"

I just wanted people to be aware of this and not buy both thinking that "After the Hole" is a sequel to "The Hole."

I found "The Hole" to be well written and the story quite good. It is a remarkable first novel for an eighteen year old author. Given that it is only 152 or 153 pages long (don't have it with me right now) it is easy to read in one "sitting" and it definitely falls within the "couldn't put it down" category.

It does take a while to get used to the format - flashbacks interspersed with "present" material but once you do, it works well.

I found "After The Hole" while searching to see if Burt had written a sequel - don't want to spoil the story but you will very likely also want to find a sequel once you read to the last page of the book. You'll find yourself with questions when you finish the book - not that it is poorly written, thus causing questions - the author deliberately leaves you with questions.

A movie, The Hole, was made in 2001, directed by Nick Hamm, and I am going to watch it as soon as I can get a copy. It is available from several sources, including Netflix.

Don't be confused by another movie with the same name which was made in 2010 and directed by Joe Dante - it is in no way related to this book.

From reviews of the movie, I suspect that some of the loose ends in the book are tied up in the movie.
