highly recommended

This was my first book by Joyce Meyer and it will not be the last. The book has inspired me to make changes in my life. Her style of writing is with lots of practical examples from her life and also with biblical foundation many quotes from the bible. The book deals with many behaviour patters which prevent us women from reaching our potencial as well as their roots and then it gives practcal advice on how to overcome them. The biblical truths stated give confidence to overcome the many fears that stop us from doing what we would like to and shoud do. The world will be a better place if women read this book and do what god has panned for them. Just like the wonderful examples stated in the book from women who have achived amazing things by living bold and courageous lives.Read it.

A Good Book With A Few Caveats

I found this book to be helpful in several ways: the author takes a consistent,recipe-like approach to bath bombs that is way overdue. Although I didn't use her recipes on my first try, I did use her technique, which left me with an round, rock hard "bomb" on the very first attempt. Good for her- I think that the authors who recommend tossing in a few ingredients, and then "spraying with water or witch hazel until it's like wet sand" should be (gently) pelted with their own non functioning products.
Now for my reservations- unless you own a heavy duty stand mixer, or are willing to go out and buy one, don't bother buying the book. The second is that some of the recipes call for exotic, expensive, or hard to find ingredients. Also some of the recipes are for very large quantities of product, not appropriate for the beginner (although I suppose they could be divided). I think a first attempt should be for 5 or 6 bombs, without all the melted butters to keep track of, till you really get the hang of it.
Finally, (and maybe this is a minor point) she recommends cold process soap as a topping for one of her bath bomb recipes. CP soap is a whole different animal. It deals in dangerous chemicals and takes a lot of care and practice. I think it's kind of silly to suggest cp soap for a first project as topping for a bath bomb cupcake. There are lots of easier and safer possibilities out there.

Solved my bath bomb aggravation in half an hour

I recently attended the Handcrafted Soap and Cosmetics Guild annual conference where I was delighted to meet Holly Port. We had a lovely chat about bath bombs, which have been causing me no end of frustration. I had essentially given up on making fizzes because my results had been so bad. Warts, cracking, crumbling and when I could get them to stick together, they were a greasy mess in the tub. Enter Holly Port. I bought the book, came home, rounded up the ingredients and 30 minutes later, I had a perfectly round, perfectly smooth, perfectly fizzy bomb. The book is clear, concise and has a number of cute variations once you've mastered the basic fizzy.

I didn't have any grape seed oil on hand, so I subbed in a 50/50 mix of almond oil and rice bran oil. My kids loved the fizz and came out of the tub smooth and hydrated. Totally recommend this book.

Very Helpful Book for Making Bath Fizzies

I was always afraid of making bath bombs as I live in a super hot climate and had always heard how difficult they were to make. After purchasing this book and attending Holly's demo at the 2014 HSCG conference in Tucson, AZ I was delighted to find just how easy they were to make as I watched the recipes executed firsthand. With book in hand I returned home motivated to try out these lovely fizzy bath treats. I purchased a KitchenAid stand mixer which I believe is key to adequate mixing as Holly states in her book. I was a bit wary of using water at first because I thought it would set off the fizzing reaction, but the agitation of the mixer prevents this from happening. That coupled with the fact that they harden up within about 30 minutes meant that I created about 30 stunning bath bombs on my first try! The book is full of beautiful color illustrations, wonderful recipes which you can tailor with your own oil/butter combos, pointers on how to troubleshoot your own batches. In addition Holly is just the sweetest, most helpful person ever, and I think there is a lot to be said for her sharing her knowledge in such a concise book. The money you will save in wasted ingredients alone as you try to perfect your technique and recipe is enough to buy the book AND a stand mixer!

Misleading Title

I had great hopes when ordering this book, but was very disappointed. I teach a Spanish course for students planning careers in healthcare that have not yet attained a significant medical vocabulary, but who have advanced skills in the Spanish language. I and am always looking for new materials that might improve the course that I teach. If this were strictly a textbook to teach medical vocabulary to English speakers, I would give 5 stars. I really like the format and general organization of the book, but the Spanish translations are not what I expected reading the title in its entirety "Building a Medical Vocabulary with Spanish Translations.
In the body of the chapter, no Spanish is given. At the end of each chapter, there is a list of English Vocabulary with a pronunciation guide, followed by a second list of other English words translated to Spanish with a Spanish pronunciation guide. Few of the words appear on both lists, and the lists of words translated to Spanish is about half as long as the list of English terms.
This could have been such a great text if the author had done better with the Spanish. Providing a haphazard list of Spanish words with a pronunciation guide does not justify including "with Spanish Translations" in the title. The author does provide the perfect context for teaching medical terminology, but she barely approaches Spanish. She does not address Spanish grammar in any fashion., and there is no mention of the multiple cultural issues needing to be addressed when treating patients across cultural and language boundaries.

About the Author
Robert Lawson (1892-1957) received his art training at the New York School of Fine and Applied Arts. His favorite medium, pen and ink, is used expressively and with detail in his black and white illustrations in The Story of Ferdinand (by Munro Leaf). In addition to illustrating many children's books, including Mr. Popper's Penguins, Robert Lawson also wrote and illustrated a number of his own books for children. In 1940, he was awarded the Caldecott Medal for his picture book illustrations in They Were Strong and Good and in 1944, he was awarded the Newbery Medal for his middle grade novel Rabbit Hill.

A "Children's" book through my tears.

I was born in '44 and my mother read this book to me time and again while showing me the drawings. I later endeavoured to read it myself. The book is not racist! It is an accurate depiction of the way things were and it tells, and tells well. the stories of the lives of the people in the book. It tells of the warmth of the love they had for each other, but without saying so. It tells of the fineness of character and the nobility of honor that they possessed, but, again, without saying so. It is a book that at age fifty seven I cannot read without weeping nor without feeling intense pride and admiration for all those in the stories. The stories awakened in me a curiosity and reverence for the stories of the lives of my own ancestors.....and I hope it does the same for each of you. What they went through! What suffering and privation! And how well they lived their lives. It is a book to give each of us pause to think and consider and reflect on the entire business of living our lives and on what standards of life and morals and principles we should chose to live by. But, simply put, it is a book of stories about ancestors and stories of what they did and stories of how they lived their lives and who they knew and how those they knew lived too. And from those simple stories may be learned the most important lessons in life. Thank you and I hope you come to love They Were Strong and Good as I do. It may be sold as a "children's" book but it should be in the library, and in the heart, of every adult.

Let's Here It for Honoring Some Forefathers!

We all have special people in our pasts, and it's delightful to see Robert Lawson share about his. Lawson's family is depicted with clever prose and his beautiful black-and-white illustrations. His reminiscence made me eager to look into my family tree for my own version of "Strong and Good."
In an age of p.c. history, it's refreshing to listen to Lawson share HIS story, whether we are pleased with all the characterizations, or not. Whitewashing history to pacify is not history, it's a tragic rinsing of what the world was like in the past. When I saw the review of this book claiming it was a racist stomach-churner, I decided to read it myself. Don't let someone else censor your child's understanding of history. (By the way, some of my ancestors were loggers and circuit-riding preachers. Lawson desribes them as a noisy bunch of obnoxious fellows. Am I offended? Not really.) Let's celebrate our histories, whatever they may be.

A piece of Americana

People have to remember the book was published in 1940. The language and ideas are typical of that era. To say it is racist, or to say that it shouldn't be republished is to deny the nations history. I feel the book is a powerful teaching tool for young people to illustrate how America has changed and how far we have come. People who do not appreciate the book have their eyes shut to history.

A great and superbly written book on filters, amps, and circuits

Wow, what a great book! Great coverage on modern network theory, filter designs, networks, LC and active filters, adjustable and amplitude equalizers, operational and linear amplifiers, nonlinear circuits, wavforms, large signal amplifiers, and much more. I'm impressed with the quality of writing and easy-to-understand illustrations and diagrams. The book covers both principles and practical design and is a superb book for anyone desiring to learn about analog filters and circuit design. Order in the Court

This apologetic work by J. Dan Gill is a skillfully woven case not only for theism, but something he refers to as monotarianism (p. 98), the existence of one God as one person. He begins his defense in the introduction as though his audience has little to no understanding of who God is or even possesses doubt regarding his existence. Quite naturally then, he begins with atheism and agnosticism, systematically working his way into examining the ways various people groups throughout the ages have thought about the divine and worshipped the “gods.” He investigates and calls into question the traditional ways Christendom has been conditioned to think about God throughout the past two millennia. Not surprisingly, the testimonies of such voices are often found confusing, contradictory and unnecessarily complicated.

The foundation of Hebrew Scriptures and the witness of the New Testament take precedent for Gill over the years of bishop and emperor governed councils and subsequent theological tradition: “Multi-personal orthodoxy ultimately triumphed not because it was a good idea or because it was biblical – it was neither. Rather, it prevailed because of persecution. With the coming of Emperor Constantine the Great and his embracing of Christianity, Christians were allowed to exist freely in the Roman world. However, that freedom applied only to people who adhered to the version of Christianity approved by Constantine and his successors” p. 255.

Gill constructs his arguments layer by layer in a clear, direct and understandable way that any layman would be able to fully appreciate. He calls relevant scholarship to the figurative witness stand for the sake of providing testimony, often revealing dubious characters, sinister plots and heinous acts.

Gill writes with a warm, friendly and gentle tone. Great heart and genuineness bleed through the pages as he discusses a plethora of issues that have captivated some Christians and addled others. He provides sufficient detail without becoming too technical or academic for the average reader. Technical details on topics that require greater explanation are put in chapter end-notes.

As I worked my way through the book, I found a number of short, quotable gems: “If it were not for the abuses of some religious people, there would be far fewer agnostics and atheists” p. 14. At the conclusion of this case, I resoundingly concurred with the verdict. The statements made in his closing remarks offer an appropriate challenge on which Christians should ruminate: “Will we forever allow ourselves to be mesmerized by proof-texting, faulty syllogisms and non-scriptural examples . . . will we cling to the notion that we are invincible? We need to quit believing our own Christian propaganda that Christianity could never be wrong in the matter of defining God” p. 263.

The Bible Tells Me So

This is an engaging and clearly written exposition of the one God of the Bible as simply one almighty, gracious person. The heart-felt, yet well-informed, narrative flows well without being slowed down by all the twists and turns necessary to present the simple biblical case for God and still respond intelligently to all the questions raised in the hearts and minds of Trinitarian or Arian believers in God and Jesus. Many details and further references are provided in the footnotes for those desiring further validation of the author's position.

Because it is so readable, biblical, and comprehensive in its scope, without being merely academic, it is an excellent first book for anyone interested in what the author terms "monotarian Christianity." He makes a strong case for this being the original faith of Jesus and the apostles, as opposed to later Arian and Trinitarian developments in theology.

Although some Trinitarians will dismiss this book as defective because it does not deal in depth with their distinction between person and being ("three who's in one what"), and the claim that singular personal pronouns can also apply to singular beings (even if multi-personal singular beings), the book so eloquently presents the simplicity and biblical appeal of the monotarian view that I still feel it deserves five stars. After all, he has another book in the works to get into more of the New Testament nitty gritty not able to be detailed in the broad sweep of this first book.

Excellent book! Well written and thought out chapters challenge your thinking, yet are convincing and eye opening. This is not "just another book" about God.
