Awesome Upgrade

This is not "the same old OMS Secrets". In the two previous versions, the answers to the questions were much more geared towards surgical rounds and would give 1 line answers, just as if you were on rounds. This book can be used as supplement for board preparation because the answers are complete paragraphs with elaboration and explanations. I am enjoying reading this version of Secrets and find that it is much more complete that the previous two versions. Nice job, Dr Abubaker et al.

David Guymer is the author of the Gotrek & Felix novels Kinslayer and City of the Damned, along with the novella Thorgrim and a plethora of short stories set in both the Warhammer World and the 41st millennium. Bittersweet goodbye to the best pair of Heroes the Old World had to offer

Bittersweet is the best way to describe it. I have been reading the series for so long its like saying goodbye to trusted friends you grew old with. Not to give away the plot, but the doom sought is upon our heroes. I thought though that the final pages and ending were a bit off, since I don't think that Gortek would have allowed Felix to complete the saga in the manner he did - not after even the gods were challenged on behalf of their friendship. It had to end, but maybe just maybe we will get more in some form or fashion if the old world continues. Great book, but I really wish it had not ended when it did. A half a dozen more books in the series would have kept me happy.

Farewell, Gotrek

This is the penultimate Gotrek & Felix story. There are a lot of loose ends to be tied up here: will Felix ever see his wife and child again? What will happen to Max? Will Gotrek meet his doom? Can the heroes hope to stop the tide of chaos?

Guymer does a fine job with the action scenes, and one featuring a bridge and a gyrocopter is particularly well done. The twists are carefully plotted, the foreshadowing is sufficiently shadowy, and the villains adequately evil. Best of all, the banter between Gotrek and Felix is well done. These people actually feel like friends, and that relationship elevates this yarn to a cut above the average Warhammer tales. Of the “End Times” series, this and its predecessor, Kinslayer, are easily the best.

The weakness of this book is the restraints imposed by the “End Times” storyline. in an effort to make things seem suitably EPIC, our heroes must contend with armies of beastmen, trolls and daemons. What should be supernatural and unique has become entirely natural and mundane. It’s like—ho hum—ANOTHER Bloodthirster of Khorne. It’s a good thing this series is over; poor Gotrek and Felix have run out of things to fight.

Also—and again this has to do with End Times story arc—you get the feeling that nothing that Gotrek and Felix will do will actually change the ultimate outcome of events. It’s a “Raiders of the Lost Ark” dilemma; if Indiana Jones had done NOTHING the outcome would have been the same—the Nazis would have destroyed themselves. Similarly, we know even if Gotrek and Felix are victorious and stop the evil daemon Belakor from fulfilling his evil plans, the Old World is doomed anyway. This undermines the suspense quite a bit. Although not Mr. Guymer's fault, it still weakens the narrative.

Nevertheless, this is a solid fantasy novel. If you are a rabid Gotrek fan, add one star to this review. If you are not, subtract one and begin with “Trollslayer.”

the best of the End of Times series

This could have only ended one way...and it did (almost). By far, the best of the End of Times series. It seems they are no longer going to publish other titles and this is really sad. Throw us a Felix novel or two. Although, in the previous book characters seemed, well, out of character, not in this final installment. Great read !!!

I stumbled upon Itsu while in London and couldn't stop eating there. Then, I discovered this cookbook! I've made many of the recipes ALL of which are low fat/calories but FULL on flavor! TO DIE FOR- One of my favorite cookbooks! A must buy!

I landed in the world of comics somewhat by chance.

I had studied literature, and I always dreamed of writing, but I never imagined I’d become a comic book author. It’s all thanks to Sylvain. Before meeting him, I didn’t really read comics (I must have read Tarzan when I was 13, and my next comic book was Blue Pills by Frederik Peeters when I was 23).

Stupidly, I believed that comics were for children, for men who refused to grow up or for people who didn’t like to read very much. In Poland, where I was born, no one tried to change my mind. There, during my childhood, comics were a marginal art form. Thanks to Sylvain, I plunged into comics not only as a reader but almost simultaneously as an author. The Marzi adventure started in 2005.

In the beginning, I struggled with my role. I was always hiding behind Sylvain who had an established career as a comics artist. He’s the one who carried Marzi on his shoulders for several years. But little by little, with the publication of each new volume, I learned (and I’m still learning) to better manage my work as scriptwriter, and my place in this world became more stable. I began to understand the importance of my work. It wasn’t by chance. Not anymore. And I didn’t want to be the author of only one comic book.

One day, I met a Polish illustrator: Krzysztof Gawronkiewicz. I liked his drawings a lot, and I wanted to work with him. At the time, I was in the midst of reading the poems of a Polish poet who wrote about the war. A few of them referenced the Warsaw Uprising in 1944.

This uprising is often confused with the uprising of the Warsaw ghetto in 1943. It was the last hope, the last attempt--powerful and at the same time desperate--of the Polish people to regain their freedom from the Nazis. It was expected to last 4 or 5 days, but it ended after 63 days. It was a true death knell to Warsaw. The Red Army had arrived on the outskirts of the city, and halted near the Vistula River, waiting for the Germans and the Poles to kill each other. Then, they arrived as the victor in the lifeless capital, and established communism. The Russians, thanks to their non-intervention, kept that historic event in the shadows (and made sure it stayed there) which is why it barely exists in Western minds.

The uprising isn’t an easy topic. It’s vast and has always stirred up a number of controversies about its meaning. But it’s a real-life story that needs to be told, and it will be the subject of my next comic, working with Kryzsztof. It’s a huge job for us and a terrific challenge that we have thrown ourselves into with great enthusiasm.

I don’t know if, working on another project that once again takes the history of Poland as its subject, I run the risk of being categorized as a Polish author, but at the same time, I know I have many other stories in my bottom drawer that aren’t necessarily about Poland, but in which no doubt my Polish sensibility, my Polishness, shines through. It’s something I’ll never escape, but I also don’t want to escape it. It’s where I find my strength. And for me, for now, it feels vital to write about my country.

There's a lot to love about Marzi, and a lot to loathe about Vertigo's mucking around with this English edition...

I was excited to get a chance to read the DC Comics Vertigo English release of the Belgian comic Marzi, which was originally published as short stories in the pages of Spirou Magazine. Marzi follows the autobiographical adventures of Marzena Sowa as she grew up and came of age in 80s era communist Poland. This first English language volume combines the first four Belgian collections (Petite Carp, Sur la terre comme au ciel, Rezystor, and Le bruit des villes), written by Sowa and illustrated by her partner Sylvain Savoia.

Getting a chance to peek behind the iron curtain and to see what Polish life was like was fascinating, particularly because it illustrated how normal the day to day really was. There are a lot of interesting shorts, like what it was like preparing for the Christmas dinner by keeping a live Carp in the bathtub for a few days, or the routine of waiting in lines for grocery staples. But what surprised me the most was the overall tone of the stories and how honestly Sowa presents herself as sort of a bratty spoiled child. Simply judging from the cover illustration, which features a young scowling Marzi awkwardly manhandling a plush bunny, tiny amongst a sea of Polish soldiers in riot gear, you get the impression that this would be a darker memoir about the struggle and hardships of life. While this is certainly a part of the backdrop to the story, it's actually more upbeat and a tad whiney. The cover illustration is actually a reworking of the cover to the second Belgian collection (Sur la terre comme au ciel - On the Ground as with the Sky), which features a more quizzical and curious Marzi. I'm wondering if the folks at Vertigo might be getting a little bit underhanded with their marketing.

Similarly, this English volume contains a complete re-coloring of the original comics. The Belgian editions were very vibrant and whimsical in tone, whereas this new volume is upping the tone of hardship behind the curtain by rendering the pages in drab browns and dull reds. It's almost as if they pulled their monochromatic color scheme from the scenes of the girl in the little red dress from Schindler's List trying to make the work more heavy and dramatic than it really is. I found this heavy-handed marketing distracting, but the content of the stories still manages to shine through.

Overall my favorite aspect of Marzi: a memoir are Savoia's illustrations. His style is much in the vein of Jeff Smith, which features the beautiful juxtaposition between realistic and exaggeratedly cartoon-y renderings. This duality in the artwork combined with the coming of age stories evokes the work of Bill Waterson's Calvin and Hobbes at times, yet still manages to feel completely like it's own work. I think fans of auto-bio comics, in particular strip comics, will find a lot to enjoy in Marzi. I just wish the translation of the comic ended with the text, instead of co-opting the tone as well.

Wonderful graphic memoir of childhood in Poland as it became free

I love graphic books, but have never seen one I enjoyed more than "Marzi." Having lived through the era of her childhood, I thought I already knew something about what was going on then in Poland. But really, I didn't, and this memoir was both highly-enjoyable and very educational about life there during the fall of communism and rise of freedom.

The book is also for me (a guy) an excellent introduction to what it was like for a young girl to grow up poor in turbulent times, and very honest about both the good and bad ways she coped with her challenges. Overall, Marzi is a person I'd really like to have as a friend, and a wonderfu ambassador for her country and culture.

The artwork added quite a lot to my enjoyment of the book.

This would be a great book to read together with kids, but isn't only for kids. It touches on some tough topics, but gently and respectfully.

Interesting Vignettes on Communist Poland

Let me just say how much I loved little Marzi. Her character is sweet, charming, and vulnerable, with a healthy dose of insecurity brought on by the culture of her environment and a mother who seemed to feel she had to bring Marzi up with an iron first. Marzi was just a normal little girl, watching as her parents stood in line for simple food staples, went to school with friends who had goods her family seemingly couldn't afford, and spent time with her country relatives, learning to store up food for leaner times. Marzi's life is what is not normal. Although she is a little girl who wants to play, to learn new things, and to have her own puppy, the world she lives in is much too oppressive for a little girl to really understand. Through her eyes, we really get to see how scary and challenging it was for the people of Poland to negotiate these last days under communist rule.

Overall, I really did enjoy this graphic novel. The version I had was a little over 200 pages long, and with the vignettes, it made it hard to stick with the novel in one sitting. I found myself coming back to it, to read a few stories at a time. One part of the story that I found especially interesting was the section after the accident in Chernobyl. Although it was far away, the affect of the radioactive cloud that traveled to Marzi's town in Poland was huge! The fears they had over the rain, the food, and even their animals sent a country already suffering for food and work into a greater tailspin. I don't know that I'd ever considered the dramatic affect this event had on other nations, but we really do get a good first-hand account from little Marzi.

On the whole, this was a good graphic novel that I could see being used to help explain more about Poland's modern history and about communism. Honestly, it has made me want to learn more about the author today and her thoughts on these events as an adult. Not a short read, but a good one!

A Gripping Yarn

This was Michael Connelly's first novel (of 6 to date) featuring LAPD detective Hieronymous "Harry" Bosch. Matters begin innocuously enough when Bosch discovers that a dead body found in a drainage pipe is a one-time Vietnam comrade of his named William Meadows. It appears to be a simple drug overdose, but Bosch suspects foul play, and when he determines he is right, he is plunged into an investigation that develops into far more than a single murder case.
The "iceberg" plot where a complex scheme is only gradually exposed is a crime fiction standard. Connelly is, even in his first novel, a master at this type of plot-line. His characters are three-dimensional and interesting, especially Bosch and his uneasy ally, FBI agent Eleanor Wish. Best of all, Connelly knows his territory--a former Los Angeles Times reporter, he knows LA and the LAPD (I suspect he still has sources in the department). The Black Echo is a superb novel.

AWESOME POLICE PROCEDURAL, CONNELLY IS THE NEW MASTER

The first book I read by Mr. Connelly was his departure from the Bosch series, "The Poet" and I knew I had to read the rest. I have read every single other Bosch novel and finally went back to the beginning and read this. I should have started with this one, its just as good if not better than the series and Bosch is a fully-fleshed out character who you can always cheer for. This book is also interesting because of its attention to detail and the police procedure as well as the first meeting of Harry and Agent Eleanor Wish, his mysterious future love. Connelly has become my favorite author and his books are a pleasure to read. Just make sure you start with this one and work your way down, it does make a difference!

An absolutely terrific first novel in the superb Hironymous Bosch series, introduces us to Michael Connelly's enigmatic and troubled LA detective. Harry Bosch lives for his job, and the cost to his personal life and relationships is troubling.

When we meet Harry, he has already been, in essence, demoted by being kicked off of the elite Robbery/Homicide squad and stuck in Homicide in the Hollywood division. But Harry is a pure detective, and will work every case with the same single-minded tenacity that gets results while alienating him from his fellows and irritating his bosses.

A throw-away death of a junkie found in a drainage pipe would have gone unnoticed if anyone but Harry Bosch had caught the call. But Bosch, while having a lousy personal life IS a superb detective, and he sees what many would miss. Not only that, but the victim is someone from Harry's past which further prompts him to look deeper. Harry's investigation causes him to cross paths with the FBI and his conflicts become even more personal when he becomes romantically involved with a female FBI agent.

The story unfolds with many surprises and the meticulous detail that we will come to expect from Connelly in the series. First rate all the way. A great beginning.

Fair, but not great.

Although it's a huge book, it only discusses basic topics that are only useful for amateurs who've never heard about facilities before. I don't recommend this book for professionals. I can't believe it was published by Association for Facilities Engineering. The only good side is that it covers a wide range of topics.

Chaim Herzog, former UN ambassador for Israel and President of the Jewish state from 1983 to 1993, who was born and raised in Ireland, where his father was Chief Rabbi, was present at the birth of the state of Israel. He served in the British Army during the Second World War, and helped liberate the Nazi concentration camps, a profoundly moving experience for a Jewish officer. Afterwards he fought in Israel's war of independence. In the UN Herzog made eloquent speeches in defense of Israel at a time when his country was increasingly isolated. His presidency saw the beginning of the Intifada, the missions to rescue Ethiopia's Falasha Jews, and the opening up of the Soviet Union. In this extensive memoir Herzog offers his memories and reflections, including comments on the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin.

Herzog, twice president of Israel (1983-93), has written an exhilarating autobiography, at once a stirring personal and political testament to some of this century's major events. Born in Belfast in 1918 to a Latvian mother and a Polish father who was chief rabbi of Ireland, he moved with his family to Palestine in 1935 and at 16 joined the Haganah, the underground resistance led by David Ben-Gurion. Receiving his higher education in London, Herzog, then a young barrister, joined the British army as soon as Britain declared war on Hitler, and he was part of the first Allied formation to cross into Germany, where he subsequently witnessed the horrors of the newly liberated Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. He fought in Israel's war for independence, and as director of Israel's military intelligence molded it into one of the best organizations of its kind. As Israel's ambassador to the UN, he valiantly fought against the 1974 resolution sponsored by what he calls "those three great bulwarks of democracy," Cuba, Somalia and Benin, equating Zionism with racism (a resolution revoked by a large majority in 1991). As Israeli president Herzog maneuvered behind the scenes to forge a coalition government and helped shape Israel's response to growing unemployment and drug use, the intifada, the Gulf War and Iraqi Scud missile attacks. Sprinkled with his brutally candid assessments of Golda Meir, Shimon Peres, Moshe Dayan, Kurt Waldheim, Reagan, Arafat and others, his memoir ends on an optimistic note, envisaging a genuine Middle East peace that could facilitate joint Israel-Arab economic and technical cooperation. In this fascinating memoir, Herzog, the president of Israel from 1983 to 1993 and the author of The Arab-Israeli Wars (1984), reflects on his life from his childhood in Dublin?where his father was chief rabbi of Ireland?to the present. Especially absorbing are his chapters devoted to the Six Day War, the Yom Kippur War, and his role as Israeli ambassador to the United Nations during the turbulent Seventies. In a concluding chapter, Herzog is critical of Benjamin Netanyahu for his alleged encouragement of extreme opposition to the Rabin government in the year immediately preceding the prime minister's assassination. While much of Herzog's book is descriptive rather than analytical, it remains a remarkable record of one of the leaders of the 20th century. Well recommended for all collections.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary

Chaim Herzog will always be remembered in my heart as the man who defended Israel's rights on and against the world's stage; the United Nations. I would like to transcribe for you a direct quote from his speech on October 17, 1975, when the UN was about to formally vote on institutionalizing the notion of "Zionism is racism":

"We have listened to the most unbelievable nonsense on the issue of Zionism and from whom? From countries who are the archetypes of racism.
...How dare you talk of racism to us, we who suffered more than any other nation in the world from racist theories and practices, a nation which has suffered the most terrifying holocaust in the history of mankind.
...This is a sad day for the United Nations. The Jewish people will not forget this scene nor this vote.
We are a small people with a proud history. We have lived through much in our history.
We shall survive this shameful exhibition, . . . and I thank the delegations who have expressed themselves against this pernicious resolution. We shall not forget those who voted to attack our religion and our faith. We shall never forget."

Of course, his entire memoir is not written out as angry as he was when his role was as Israel's ambassador to the UN, but his writings are just as passionate.
For anyone interested in the history of the modern state of Israel, this is a must read. He was there at just about every important turn and twist; (British intelligence officer in) World War II, Israel's War of Independence, at David Ben-Gurion's side, the Six-Day War and the Yom Kippur War, the "Zionism is Racism" debate, and as the president of Israel for ten years -- through a national unity government and the Intifada.
Simply an amazing life.

A wonderful read

A wonderful autobiography of Israeli statesman, diplomat, spymaster and politician, Chaim Herzog. Chaim Herzog was among a very fascinating family that included the Chief Rabbi of Israel in the 40s. Chaim himself served in numerous posts, finally becoming President of Israel in the 80s. This narrative covers every aspect of Israeli history from its high points to its low ones. Chaim has been central to every major event in Israeli history, from the siege of Jerusalem in 1948 to the Ethiopian airlift. His smart, to the point, autobiography pulls no punches in its incisive critique of Israeli society today and the mirror of the past. For instance he takes to task such luminaries as Golda and Dayan, while criticizing the rise of `fundamentalism' in Israeli society, painting a not so pretty picture of today's Yeshiva attitude towards serving in the IDF. He explains how the Rabbinate was actually more liberal in the 1940s then it is today. This is a wonderful tour de force on Israeli history, from someone who was central to Israeli policy for year. Not an apologists account, Chaim equally praises Ariel Sharon for his Unit 101 strategies as well as Peres for his inventive ideas. Probably no one in modern Israeli society could be so unbiased as to see the vital gifts that both Sharon and Peres have given to Israel. A must read for anyone interested in Israel or the modern political situation in the middle east.

An amazing person & story.

I met Chaim Herzog in 1996, after the publication of his book and just before his death. I knew that he was one of Israel's formost warriors/statesmen, but of his life in between, well, I realized that I knew nothing indeed about him until I began to read his memoir.
The title "Living History" is perfect in all its sense. It's a fascinating account of his and modern Israel's story.

Fine Resource Book Both During College and Now While Employed in the Ocuupational Therapy Field

Find this to be a great textbook to keep around for answering those periodic questions needing relevant information involving patient care issues. As to myself, I've always purchased the paper editions rather than the electronic versions for ease of accessing the large volume of material within and would recommend the same to others. A very good book and glad I held on to this one!

SCOTT SLOTNICK is Associate Professor of Psychology at Boston College, USA. As well as teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience, he is also an active researcher in this field with particular interest in the neural mechanisms mediating human memory, perception, and attention.

An Excellent and Unique Perspective on the World of Cognitive Neuroscience

I read this book as part of a college course on the same topic, and to this day it still serves as an invaluable source of knowledge and understanding. It's written in a way that's accessible, yet still covers the material in detail, ultimately providing a nuanced look at many common themes within the field. Even as a student with little background on these topics, I found it easy to dive right in and be a part of the conversation, having this book as a resource.

It's organized in a logical way -- starting with an introduction and overview of the methods / common practices of the field, and then moving into specific controversies, which are laid out chapter by chapter. These controversies cover a broad range of topics, from perception to attention, memory, language, social processing, and others. For any given controversy, the author presents findings on both sides of the debate, and encourages the reader to think critically along the way. This may have been my favorite aspect of the book -- it facilitates the formation of critical analyses/interpretations of the many different pieces of research that are presented.

This is certainly a valuable piece of literature to have -- not only for it's unique collection and comparison of large bodies of scientific research, but also for the sort of critical thinking skills it encourages.

Great Review of Controversies, Especially for Those Who Have Little/No Previous Knowledge on the Topics

Scott's book is a very helpful guide for students, professors, or other psychology professionals wishing to pick up some information on current controversies in cognitive neuroscience. Many methods are involved as well as a great range of papers and topics; all papers are accessible and free. Both sides of each controversy are well considered and good evidence is given for both sides.

My only issue with the controversies is my lack of intimate knowledge with certain methods, so I sometimes would get bogged down in trying to understand exactly what was happening technically in each study. Overall however, the point was well-conveyed and I always had a basic understanding of the arguments from each side of a controversy.

Great book!

A great way to learn both sides of the story! Evidence from both sides of each debate is presented thoroughly, which encourages readers to draw their own conclusions on each issue. Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about a variety of hot topics in cognitive neuroscience.
