About the Author

Robert N. Lussier is a professor of management at Springfield College. He has been teaching management courses for more than 25 years. He has a national and international reputation for his methods for applying concepts and developing skills that can be used both personally and professionally. A prolific writer, Dr. Lussier has more than 400 publications to his credit, including Management Fundamentals 7e (Sage), Human Relations 10e (McGraw-Hill), Leadership 6e (South Western/Cengage), and others. He has also published in top tier academic journals including Journal of Management Education, Journal of Business and Entrepreneurship, and Journal of Business Strategy. Lussier holds a bachelor of science in business administration from Salem State College, master's degrees in business and education from Suffolk University, and a doctorate in management from the University of New Haven. Content is good, needs to be edited

Using this for my Principles of Management class and man is it full of errors. There are some grammar mistakes throughout. The content seems decent enough, however. There are plenty of applications and case studies in the book that help solidify concepts. There are self-assessments too that help with class discussion. One thing I find really annoying is that there are review questions in the chapters but no answer keys that I could find.

Our professor told us that Sage purchased this book from a different publisher and didn't realize that it wasn't edited to the quality they wanted. I think they are working on a new edition for this.

Overall I probably wouldn't recommend this book until the errors are fixed and maybe they add answer keys to review questions. With some editing this could be a great management book!

I really needed to get this book for school, but I didn't have the money to get it. Even used I didn't have the money. So I borrowed this book. I am so glad it was only a borrow. I managed to pass the class and still save money from borrowing this book. I think the renting option is the best form of getting a book. I was able to pass the class with a good grade. Also, I didn't have to keep a book that I would have only used for one semester. And it only cost one fourth of the price the book would have cost me had I bought it new. I was also able to rent it for the whole semester. I cant really go into what the book is about since its a book that you need for a class. Why else would anyone buy this book? I mean, I guess... If you're really into that kind of thing.

This book is really informative, and great even outside of class. I used this for my business management class in a junior college, but I know I'm probably going to go back and use this book in the future.

About the Author

Jerry R. Thomas, EdD, is professor and dean of the College of Education at the University of North Texas. Besides writing the previous editions of this book, Thomas has authored more than 200 publications, over 120 of which are refereed publications, with numerous contributions in research methods. Awarded the C.H. McCloy Lecturer in 1999, based on his career research production, Thomas has served as editor in chief for Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport and as a reviewer for most major research journals in kinesiology and numerous journals in psychology. He has also served as president of the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education, American Kinesiology Association, AAHPERD Research Consortium, and of the North American Society for Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity. He was named an AAHPERD Alliance Scholar in 1990 and NASPSPA Distinguished Scholar in 2003, based on lifetime achievement in research.

Jack K. Nelson, EdD, is professor emeritus in the department of kinesiology at Louisiana State University. Nelson conducted and published research and taught research methods for 35 years. He has advised more than 50 doctoral dissertations and more than 50 masters' theses. In addition, he has more than 80 publications and has served as editor of research publications. A fellow in the Research Consortium, he has been a member of AAHPERD, the American Educational Research Association, and the American College of Sports Medicine. He has also served as president of the Association for Research, Administration, Professional Councils and Societies (now AAALF) and as vice president of AAHPERD.

Stephen Silverman, EdD, has taught and written about research methods for over 25 years. He is a professor of education at Teachers College, Columbia University, and he has conducted research on teaching in physical education focusing on how children learn motor skill and develop attitudes. He has published more than 60 research articles in addition to many books and book chapters. Silverman is a fellow and past president of both the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) Research Consortium, and a fellow of the American Educational Research Association (AERA). A former coeditor of the Journal of Teaching in Physical Education and editor in chief of the Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, Silverman was an AERA Physical Education Scholar Lecturer, a Research Consortium Scholar Lecturer, and Weiss Lecturer for AAHPERD.

Kindle version issues

The kindle version is not the best. It does not have page numbers which is really a drag when your teacher tells you to look at page 207 or whatever. Other kindle books I have do have the page numbers and there needs to be a way to put page numbers in for text books. Even if it is an estimate. Also, the figures are terrible and blurry. One table we used a lot in class, couldn't even make out the numbers. Amazon can do better.

improvements

Having personally used the 5th edition in a recent class, I found several typos and offered a couple suggestions regarding an appendix of symbols and easier access to pertinent formulas which in the 5th edition were difficult to locate in the text. These were conveyed from my professor to the authors, and improvements in ease of use were made. Good luck, researchers!!

Roller-coaster existentialism, and fun, too!

"Watt" is the hilarious story of an itinerant character who walks one day from a train station, like a homing pigeon, straight to the home of a man whom he will serve. He enters the kitchen to take his spot, whereupon the present kitchen worker issues a rambling monologue of stunning length and baffling content, then leaves the household for Watt to stay behind. In the first few pages, we are already asking: Why did Watt just show up? Whose house is this? Who is this man in the kitchen already? Why is he delivering this major dissertation? What does it all mean?
The rest of the book concerns Watt's service to the master of the house, some of it conventionally narrated, much of it digressive and odd. To explain this book, however, is to sound ridiculous. A certain number of things happen to Watt, he takes a certain number of actions, he engages in a certain number of conversations, and he ends the story in the book in a certain meaningful fashion. The entire story is told in Beckett's trademark effusive style, a rollicking, bizzare, but highly entertaining profusion.
The meaning of the book is also classic Beckett: Don't wait for Higher Meaning, because there is none. All his books portray absurd characters doing absurd things, waiting for life to reveal itself, but ultimately realizing that life reveals itself through the living. To answer the questions posed above, the book is compsed like a circle, just like life. At the same time, it's also completely meaningless, just like life. We go to some place, we stand in some position, we engage with some people, we commit some acts, we turn and commit other acts, and we engage with some other people. Somehow, among all this ballet, the world still turns, and we still live upon it. For all their foolish sounding, Beckett's books do indeed have a meaning, that life is just the living of it.
Beckett is a psychological master. His prose style will never be repeated. I'd call him the Babe Ruth or Michael Jordan of literature, a crude analogy, for which we should apologize, but it is one that we hope reflects the major impact of his work on the art, and his primacy among its literary practitioners.
Beckett's work is random by no means. It is carefully crafted, and has an internal rhythm all its own. If a reader is willing to take off their shoes and run through the squishy mud of Beckett's life-swamp, so to speak, it is a joy to read and great fun to reflect upon. "Watt" is a good example of his work, relatively short, and relatively simple, but still likely to provoke great consternation among any who are not used to Beckett's gushing and admirable style, but great enjoyment among those who take it on its own life-affirming terms.
Beckett is a great writer for those readers who seek a literary puzzle, a semantic challenge, and a story with a surreal whiff, which tells us how wonderful it is just to be alive, enjoying our time on earth. "Watt" is one of Beckett's more accessible and fun works.

Funny AND Avant-garde

This novel is SO funny! I know it's an avant-garde masterpiece and all, but it's also hilarious. I guess if we read it straight, we would have to conclude that the protagonist, Watt, is schizophrenic, along with the narrator also, probably. The characters are not realistic. Plot actions seem completely random and unmotivated. Watt's characteristic action is to consider every possibility in every situation, and every possible combination of possibilities. There's one part that had me laughing out loud. Watt is some kind of minor servant in a household, and his orders are to feed the leftovers to the dog. But there is no dog! So Watt dreams up all these far-fetched and absurd schemes for finding a dog to feed the leftovers to. I couldn't stop laughing, but my friends say I have a weird sense of humor.

It's so hard to get good help in a Beckett novel...

To a house in the country comes an enigmatic man named Watt to take the place of an outgoing servant in the household staff of a man equally enigmatic, Mr. Knott. From this commonplace beginning, Samuel Beckett weaves a most uncommon tale that can perhaps only be accurately described as...well, Beckettian.

Watt is of that distinctive tribe of shabby, decrepit, stumblebums who are regularly featured as "heroes" of Beckett's work. In the case of the present novel, Watt becomes obsessively preoccupied with the habits, duties, and peccadilloes of the other household staff and, in particular, of his erstwhile new employer, the aforementioned, Mr. Knott. Clever how Beckett has Watt--a cipher himself--trying to decipher another cipher, Mr. Knott. To Watt, his employer, who he eventually comes to dress and undress, remains an elusive albeit binding mystery. But then virtually everything presents itself as a mystery to Watt and becomes the subject of long, tortured, and mostly humorous super-logical speculations that seek to take every possible explanation into account for even the most mundane phenomenon--with invariably absurd results. What you have is the literary equivalent of the old proverb of the spider who asked the centipede how it manages to walk with all those legs--and the centipede trying to explain suddenly finds he can't take another step without falling. The same sort of paralysis grips Watt's efforts to understand Mr. Knott and, for that matter, the absurdity of life in general. It's an affliction very common to characters in Samuel Beckett's work--and probably one that strikes a sympathetic chord in the experience of his most appreciative readers.

Indeed, significant portions of *Watt* will likely try the patience of lesser fans comprised as these portions are of quasi-Biblical lists of absurd comprehensiveness, extended series of repetitions detailing, for instance, all the possible permutations a man might manage when shodding his feet with the customary footwear available to him each morning: a shoe, a boot, a sock, and a slipper. Like a lot of Beckett, these kinds of ridiculously exhaustive lists of minutiae gather a certain sort of power and poetry when read aloud, but they are nearly impossible to get through with any profit while reading silently on a crowded bus, let's say.

On the other hand, *Watt,* like *Mercier and Camier* is quite a bit more conventional than Beckett's later fiction; though, of course, "conventional" in regard to Beckett is a relative term. In this case, *Watt* features genuine dialogue, a range of character viewpoints, and, if not a plot in the ordinary sense, than a plot in the extraordinary sense.

Mordant, ribald, dark, and grotesque, not to mention slapstick, sometime Three Stooges-like funny, *Watt* may not be Beckett at his peak, but he's clearly on his way--and Beckett anywhere on the climb is head and shoulders above just about anyone else.

Illustrating Battles--very helpful for martial arts scenes!

I started taking martial arts a couple of years ago just to help my cartoon characters learn to fight in a realistic way... this book can save you a couple steps (and dollars!)
Beautiful pictures, very helpful, but I would not recommend this as a "how to draw" book for beginners... it's not good with 'step by step' stuff. If you can already draw, and want to figure out how to lay out 'speed lines' and dynamic action scenes, then this is a very good book for you!
This book has shown me many moves I already know, but it puts it in an artists perspective, something my martial arts teacher lacks... It also has many other things I didn't know, it covers many styles of fighting.
Being a Japanese release, it also has a big "Girls in Sailor School Uniforms Fighting" chapter, very helpful if you are drawing girls fighting in Sailor School uniforms.(?!) You have to love Manga to have an appreciation for that... heehee.
In short, you don't have to sign up for Martial Arts lessons to learn how to draw realistic fighting scenes... this book WILL help. (I will continue to take my classes though!)
The other books in this series are wonderful, as well, I can't wait for them to release more!

One of The Best Manga Books

I am a person who,has the talent to draw well, likes to draw, but has some trouble drawing Manga-style. These books, from the batch I ordered, are pretty helpful, you just have to add your talent and practise and you will equal a good artist.
I ordered this book from this website and I was not disapointed. This is a great and unigue book.I don't think there might be anything like it or close to it again(except probably for HTDM martial arts and cmbat sorts) but I haven't read that book yet.
This book show you almast everything you need... from different types of punches to different and kicks and their effect depending on which part of the body it hits (This is very important and I never got this right before I got this book)to grabbing, throwing and detaining someone. There is even a part showing how to draw different slaps. To the end it shows how to draw sailor scout uniform battle (in other words girls battling in their school uniform).
There is alot of information packed into this book. Most of the characters are not drawn perfect like in some other HTDM books so you can easily apply the techniques from here to your own original characters but don't expect to learn how to draw a character from this book because this book is just for fighting reference!
This book is a must have for anyone who want to learn how to draw fight scenes with manga characters or anything else along that line.
I will also recommend this for the general manga artist who is still unsure what to draw next.

A great book for budding scientists

This is another great book in the Let's Read and Find Out Science series. Younger children (like my son who was age 4 when we first began with this book) and older children (who are reading on their own) will be delighted and educated with this book. Whimsical illustrations demonstrate complex scientific information in a very approachable manner.

In this book children will learn overarching concepts of meteorolgy and actual scientific terminology in a progressive manner. Children will learn about:

1. Fronts (Cold and Warm) and their affect on weather.
2. How air pressure is determined and what happens in Low Pressure vs. High Pressure. They learn about barometers.
3. Wind speed and direction, including names of instruments (wind vane and anemometer).

The colorful illustrations and simple diagrams reinforce the infomration contained in the book and help children understand the basic concepts of a weather formation.

Diagrams include:

1. Fronts & Front Formations
2. Water Vapor
3. Weather Maps
4. High & Low Pressure Systems

This book is an excellent addition to your science library. Perfect for budding scientists...or to generate a budding scientist by feeding their minds with sound teaching about the world around us rather than empty stories.

Interesting and Vocabulary Builder

The books in this series explain things that kids need to know in a way they can understand. Young elementary kids (grade K-2) will learn from these as a read a loud and kids a little older (grade 3-5) would enjoy these as an independent read and vocabulary builder. You can easily plan a study unit around each of these books or use them as an addition to the curriculum you alread use. They can be read in one sitting without boring the child. The photos are a great plus and help hold the kids attention. This particular book has been our favorite since my daughter in interested in meterology. I recommend using this series as a summer education builder. Use one book each week as a theme throughout your summer. Never stop learning!

Good book- but for older kids

Purchased this for our kindergartener who loves the weather, and to fulfill a reading requirement at his school. While this book is great, it's pretty long and detailed for a 5-6 year old. Our son is too clever for us to skip over parts these days, so while this book won't become a favortie, it is full of good information that's easy to understand (I even learned a thing or two!) and while it's not "over the head" of a kindergartener, the length is.

The Mystery Girl was the best book I've ever read because it was very mysterious.I liked it when Benny always said how he liked to eat alot.I also like how the end ended but,I'm not going to tell you the end you read it and you find out how great it is.

Tremendous White repertoire, volume 2

This is the second volume of Avrukh's White opening repertoire with 1. d4, and covers all cases where Black does not answer 1. ...d5. These lines are covered in the first volume, 1.d4 (Grandmaster Repertoire) (v. 1). He focuses on systems that include a Kingside fianchetto, as he believes in denying Black the fun of a Kingside attack as much as possible. So this is a repertoire for the more aggressive player.

Because of this emphasis, he avoids a few extremely tactical lines in which both sides essentially spin the wheel, such as Benoni variations in which White plays an early f4. Against the Grunfeld he recommends two lines, both with a Kingside fianchetto: 5. cxd5 Nxd5 6. Nf3, which gets about 30 pages of coverage, and 5. b3, with Black being the one to capture on c4. Against the Benko gambit he looks at a number of minor but tricky lines for Black before settling in to the main lines with ...Ba6 and ...Nbd7, which he analyzes out to variation B322323. As with the other books in this series, Avrukh's analysis is a healthy compromise between the "tree" format (which nowadays, with the state of theory, more resembles a bush or a thicket) and the "game" format. He has clear main lines in bold face, with an index at the start of each of the 38 chapters, and each main line has one or at most two offshoots at each branching point. Ideas are presented more in the form of moves than in text, although there is some verbal explanation of ideas, but this remains a book for advanced tournament players and international players, rather than beginners, intermediate, or club players.

One of the highlights of this book is that it complements not only Avrukh's volume 1, but also Marin's first volume on the English, Grandmaster Repertoire 3 - The English Opening vol. 1. If you play the English and have appreciated Marin's book as much as I have, you will find that the repertoire choice for the King's Indian in this book blends in very nicely. Between the two of them, they are constructing a marvelously rich opening repertoire in the Closed and Flank openings.

Avrukh gives a lot of information about move-order subtleties. For example, after 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. g3 Bg7 4. Bg2 d6 5. Nc3 0-0 6. Nf3 Nc6 7. 0-0, he illustrates the difference it makes whether Black first plays ...a6 or ...Rb8. He describes how he intended to play 8. h3 against both, but against 7. ...a6 8. h3 Black plays 8. ...Bd7 and gets a good game. Thus, he recommends 7. ...a6 8. Qd3, which he backs up with extensive analysis, but against 7. Rb8 he goes with 8. h3 followed by g4. Wherever he made such repertiore decisions, Avrukh scrupulously describes the reasons why he made the decisions he made, usually with variations to illustrate the point. He rarely just states a conclusion without some kind of support.

Overall, an indispensable book for anyone following either Avrukh's or Marin's repertoires.

very ambitious work; make sure you're up to the challenge!

Avrukh's two-volume repertoire series will surely be remembered as some of the best chess opening literature in history. But at 600+ pages of dense analysis for the second volume alone, this work is probably more ambitious most chess players are prepared to handle, myself included (and I'm USCF 1950).

Just a helpful hint if that sounds like you: I'd recommend starting with a more digestible repertoire based around the Catalan and kingside fianchetto variations first. For example, the "Wojo's Weapons" series is high quality and highly accessible. I think it's important to first develop a complete repertoire, then supplement it with chapters from Avrukh's magnum opus as needed. Over time you might supplement the entire repertoire. The point is that I can imagine someone trying to tackle this monster and never quite feeling truly prepared sitting at the board because you're still learning the main lines. Just my two cents.

Excellent wealth of information but difficult to absorb

First off this is a well organized, analyzed, and clearly explained guide that compliments 1.D4 volume one. I have both books. However, I have mixed feelings about both of them. Unless you have lots and lots of time and a training partner, it is virtually impossible to absorb all the information that Boris Avrukh puts forward. From my experience the gap between theory and practice is much greater below master strength while from master to grandmaster the gap gets considerably narrower. If most of your opponents are below master-grandmaster strength then this book (both volumes) would not serve you that well.

So from a theoretical perspective this book (including volume 1) is stellar but how to convert theoretical knowledge into practical success is not so easy. Here is where the book will not help in that it doesn't show you how to convert a theoretical plus into a win but Avrukh assumes that you have the skill to do that. Ideally, if one could learn how to properly handle middle-game structures then books such as Avrukh's would be the logical next step. However, most chess players have the cart before the horse in that they learn theoretical lines first before knowing how to convert superior positions into winning positions. If it were me, I would have focused on the middle-game positions for those openings discussed by Avrukh and then after having a really good feel for them then go into theoretical lines.

So what's the alternative. Well, from the first players' (white) perspective you could adopt a reversed Grunfeld against everything as suggested by Bent Larsen's "Zoom 001" which involves pattern recognition rather than theoretical memorization. A review of that book is another discussion.

In short, I wish that Avrukh has demonstrated more pattern recognition for the openings he discusses. If you're willing to put in a lot of hours and work with a training partner then Avrukh's books will pay huge dividends, but you would be better off first learning the middle-game scenarios of those openings you wish to explore and then return to Avruhk's discussion of those lines.
