Ancient history as we know it is full of voids, puzzles and conflicting theories. Empire of Thebes is the starting point of "Ages in Alignment," an originally researched reconstruction, from the advent of literate civilization to the conquest of Alexander. Inspired by Velikovsky's 1952 series "Ages in Chaos," this "Ages in Alignment" series seeks to complete the work which he commenced, identifying the problems Velikovsky could not solve, and bringing forward a great body of evidence not even mentioned by Velikovsky which supports his identification of Hatshepsut with the Queen of Sheba. Velikovsky was rejected by the academic establishment because of a number of contradictions in the chronology he outlined. Yet Sweeney shows that despite some gaps and incompletions, his books were brilliant works of scholarship with much to recommend them. For decades now various scholars have attempted to solve the enigma. Yet the answer was stunningly simple, and in front of us all the time. Empire of Thebes provides the solution and finally allows the possibility of a complete and satisfactory reconstruction of ancient history. This work calls for a much more radical shortening of ancient chronology and asserts that Velikovsky ran into a dead end because he placed too much reliance on the Bible as a chronological measuring rod. Finally, the end of the 18th Dynasty was the focus of one of Velikovsky's most fascinating books but he left the story of the demise of Akhnaton's line unfinished. This period is examined in detail in Empire of Thebes, and the author shows which foreign power it was who came to the assistance of Tutankhamun's brother Smenkhare after the latter had been expelled from Egypt. Other periods are covered in three other volumes, namely "The Genesis of Israel and Egypt," "The Pyramid Age" (Algora 2007) and "The Ramessides, Medes and Persians," (Algora, fall 2007). All of these books reach fairly dramatic conclusions, but - although it's not first in line, chronologically - the Empire of Thebes is where the story begins.

Review
A specialist in early modern history, Sweeney (West U., Romania) here continues his reconstruction of ancient history drawing on the scholarship of Immanual Velikovsky during the 1950s, but correcting the errors introduced by his mistaking the Bible for a historical record. This third volume focuses on the 18th, or Theban Dynasty in Egypt. He project four volumes, five counting the volume on Arthur. --Reference & Research Book News

Great Ideas, but rough presentation
By Bart Brodowski
Having read several other books by Sweeney, I think I am competent enough to say that this volume is the weakest of the bunch. It's not that the arguments presented in it are invalid. I agree wholeheartedly with the basic premise that the Hittites and Lydians were the same people; and likewise that the Assyrians and Neo-Assyrians were two images of the same people, and numerous other such claims, all suggesting that Ancient history is not as old as we think it is. At the root of Sweeney's argument is that the Dark Ages imposed on us by archaeologists, who themselves were operating with a flawed and greatly inflated Egyptian history, are completely bogus, as are the separation of various peoples (known to us under different names). That's all made very clear. What I don't like in this particular volume is the presentation. The author's style of argumentation appears to be aimed at the common man, i.e. at someone not very informed about the ancient Middle East. And yet the vast amounts of names and facts being thrown around will be overwhelming to all but a true student of Ancient History. Also, some of the linguistic and archaeological evidence presented, while valid, will fall flat simply because few people will even understand it. Certainly more effort should have been taken to first illustrate Ancient History as is, then explain its many flaws, then start to deconstruct it, rather than just deconstruct it on the fly. Still, if you are interested in Ancient History and, like myself, want to learn the truth after being fed lies all your life, you HAVE TO READ THIS! One advise I would give to those who are up to the task is to read the volumes in order, and start with Genesis of Israel and Egypt and then the very eye-opening Pyramid Age.
