About the Author
John Howard Sanden's career as a portrait artist has spanned three decades. Since moving from the Midwest to New York City in 1969, he has been called upon by more than 500 of the nation's public and business leaders to portray them in his striking painting style. (In a 1991 New York Post, popular columnist Pete Hamill said that "John Howard Sanden is the closest we have in America to fit the old role of court painter.")

Sanden is widely regarded as the foremost teacher of professional portrait methods in the world today. Founder of the Portrait Institute of New York, he has toured the nation teaching his ideas and techniques to thousands. His books and videos have extended his teaching even further. In a 1984 article in Profile, the magazine of the American Portrait Society, the Society's president wrote, "John Howard Sanden may well be the best known name in contemporary American portraiture." On May 29, 1994, the American Society of Portrait Artists presented Sanden with their first John Singer Sargent Medal for Lifetime Achievement.

Discipline Combined with Talent. A Powerful Combination

The first time I paged through this book, I was struck immediately by Sandin's obvious abilities as a portrait painter, but even more, I was enchanted with the bold crispness of his alla prima paintings and demonstrations. I so envy the confidence, technical skill, and freedom that such paintings radiate. I was also struck at once by the seeming contradictions through out the book. Could someone who looks like a doctor, paints in a tie and lab coat in a pristine, lavishly furnished studio really produce such dramatically rendered work? And then there are the 29 steps mentioned in the title. Twenty nine? Not thirty? Not twenty? And finally, the author's "Pro Mix" paint system seemed a little like a paint-by-number approach. But now, having read this beautiful book dozens of times and painted several portraits under its guidance, I can recommend it without hesitation.
Mr. Sandin has made me understand the importance of discipline in what I do as an artist. His insistance in following a routine (the 29 steps) and using predicable, tested color combinations (his pro mix system) are part of this lesson. Through out the book, he hammers on the concept, "...marshall all your concentration, alertness, and energy so that every stroke of the brush becomes part of the finished statement....concentrate all you effort upon getting it right the first time..." It took awhile and a number of readings before I begin to truely understand, but now my portraits are dramatically improved because of this approach.
As you have read in other reviews here, Mr. Sandin references his color mix system throughout the book. At first I found this inconvenient, since it was necessary to constantly turn back to the part of the book where the mixes are explained. However, this was easily solved by painting a color chart using the mixes, labelling them with his color mix names, and putting it next to my easel. He recommends this as an essential exercise, and I agree. Not only did I create a conversion chart of his mixes, but I learned a lot about cooling, warming and nuetralizing colors. I haven't bought the Pro Mix system, yet I have had great success with his color approach. Don't let this issue keep you from having this invaluable resource book.
I am painting more, and having greater success because of Mr. Sandin's emphasis on discipline in the painting process. It is a constant struggle -the urge to dabble and fuss is powerful - but I constantly remind myself of his direct and controlled process and my paintings are better and better.

This guy is good- so is his book

Within the narrow scope of portraiture for the well-to-do, Sanden is the best, and he knows how to teach; the book is as methodical as he is. And his paintings look great- the epitome of a sort of smooth and buttery '50s illustrational style, like Haddon Sundblom, but tighter- very disciplined and technically acccomplished, yet lyrical. Any objections to Sanden's seeming promotion of his "Pro-Mix" brand of paints are unfounded (that's where you order a box of pre-mixed colors made by a company which has a deal with the author). He tells you exactly how to mix the colors yourself out of the usual tubes of paint you can buy in any art store, so you can either order them pre-mixed, or do it yourself, so where's the problem? The delight of this book is looking at the step by step demonstrations of all those juicy, painterly pictures of people with lots of personality. His two hour sketches are beauties (more "artistic" than his finished commissions). I got a lot out of the book, most of which is the wisdom of the ages anyway, but stated in a no-nonsense fashion (maybe a little dogmatic in a few instances, but the guy does a certain style and he has his game down pat, so just pick what you need). Sanden's work is aimed at the tastes of those who have become CEOs, Church leaders, and heads of State, and is frankly corny (unless, like me, you are so modern you get off on that) but his revealing demos really explain the dazzling virtuosity. If you're serious about painting heads, this belongs on your shelf. In and of itself, it won't teach you to paint, but what will?

Portrait Paintings in 29 Steps

This is a very good book, with basic principles presented in a rationale manner. Especially the view of the head as a sculpture showing the values by illuminating the carved statue of the head. The full effects of this book cannot be appreciated without using the promix system, and the DVD that corresponds to the book. You need to have both of these to obtain maximum information. Overall I would rate this book and the DVD that corresponds to it as very good and informative. I am still practicing the techniques, so a complete analysis cannot be made for about one year. At this point it is worth the price of admission. This is a good book for an intermidiate level artist. This is not for a beginner. You need to know how to draw portraits first, especially with a long handled brush.

Catching Up

Larry Niven's candour about his writing and his frequent references to his own work mean the fan and scholar have an easy and fun time reading his works and tracing them back to their sources and seeing how they all link together. The problem for readers outside the US is tracking down where these stories appear. So it's great when a collection like this comes along. The previous three, N-Space, ,Playrounds of the Mind and Scatterbrain offered a thorugh retrospective of Niven's writing career up to just before the publication of Ringworld's Children, his last solo novel, and Stars and Gods picks up the bibliography from there.

In and around the stories and excerpts from novels are little introductory pieces by Niven giving you the ral-life background or literary environment in which the piece belongs and sometimes these intros explain a point that might be a bit obscure in the text. Like most Niven they're worth pondering a bit and you get nice aphorims about the writing craft, too. Plus the introductions and afterwords are what's it all about--they're the written equivalent of a DVD commentary.

My personal highlight is "The Gatherers' Guild". Niven says this is his best conspiracy story, so if you like the idea that there are not-so-secret government agencies covertly running your life, buy this book.

I am not going to apologize!

For my love of Larry Niven's work. No, I am not, I can't really explain it, as it doesn't seem to mesh with the rest of my tastes when it comes to written fiction. The writing isn't in any way impressive, the characters... Okay I love Louis Wu and Beowulf Schaeffer, and Chmee, but past that? In the whole vast set of Larry's work I can barely name anyone else. But if you find that you like his work then get this thing, gobble it up and enjoy!

About the Author
Kari Dunn Buron is an autism resource specialist in Minnesota. Kari has worked with students with autism spectrum disorders for over 20 years, has served as president of the Minnesota Autism Society, and works with the Minnesota Autism Network to bring training opportunities to teachers. Kari also developed the ASD certificate program at Hamline University and is the director of Camp Discovery, a summer camp for children with Asperger Syndrome. Kari recently received a fellowship that will allow her to travel throughout the world studying Asperger Syndrome to help determine the critical elements of an appropriate educational program.

Mitzi Beth Curtis is an autism resource specialist in Minnesota and serves as an adjunct instructor for Hamline University’s autism certificate program. She has worked in special education, supported employment, and residential programs for individuals with disabilities since 1978. Her youngest sister, Maria, sent her on this journey with her birth in 1963.

Five Stars for Five Point Scale

The concept in this book is one of those that makes you say, "Well YEAH, DUH." Because it's so simple and workable you wished you'd thought of it yourself! The basic premise is any behavior goal you want to work on with a child can be addressed in a five point scale. I'll give my son as an example. He yells like a maniac...when he's just talking in his normal voice. This drives me CRAZY. So, his scale is 5: I'm being kidnapped, or I'm just having a really, really, really good time on the playground OUTSIDE. 4. Loud play, but not ear piercing. 3. NORMAL INSIDE VOICE (my favorite) 2. Shhhh, whisper and 1. SILENCE (okay, I fibbed, many times THIS is my favorite.) It can also be used for expressing how the CHILD is FEELING. Anxiety levels, fear levels. The idea is that you can address many different issues whether at home or school, it gives clear examples, reproducable sheets and it's an easy concept for teachers, parents and kids to understand. I also love the companion book "When My Autism Gets Too Big", which I highly recommend for kids (and for the adults who care about them.) Incidentally, while the examples in the book are color coded and they are ingeneious ways to implement them in the school and classroom--as a parent I think that there's a reason gave me FIVE FINGERS! The Incredible Five Point Scale of course!! When I hold up three fingers, my son's voice automatically lowers because it's his signal to go DOWN on the scale.

Great book! Fun, nice visuals. Also, there is a DVD, which is a great way to demonstrate the program and have all team members (at home and at school) on the same page.

Fun for Students with Autism

I purchased this book for work with teens with Asperger's Syndrome (AS) and related disorders. It is Incredible! My students have a limited emotional vocabulary and an "all-or-nothing" sense of their upsets or other issues. The Five Point Scale can be adapted for most situations. My students are learning to create their own Five Point Scales; they draw their five faces to represent the range of how a particular feeling looks, for example "When I'm Frustrated." Next we are going to use photographs - students taking pictures of their five faces to foster intra-personal intelligence (how my face looks when I'm ...) and learn how to emotionally self-regulate (when i feel my face getting up to a 3 I should . . . ). My only criticism is that the scale is not consistent in it's ratings. One area uses 1 as Lowest and 5 as highest [e.g. ANGER: 1 = annoyed and 5 is rage/melt down]. Another scale is reversed with 1 as the highest and 5 the lowest. This confuses the students so we change the scale for consistency. The Incredible Five Point Scale is useful scale for teachers and parents of students who need support in emotional self-regulation, not just those with autism. It is concrete, visual, and students are engaged in their own learning when they develop their personal scale to use. Adults could use the activities in this book in a fun way with the students so that they are engaged in their own learning. It is much better than arguing or lecturing an upset teen.

A good guide, not perfect, but worth having!

I got my kids two strategy guides when Pokemon Gold & Silver came out, this one and the "official" Nintendo one. Of the two, this one has gotten MUCH more use. My daughters have marked lots of areas with PostIt flags, the pages are dog-eared, the back is getting ripped, you know they use it!
I realize the previous reviewers noted some minor problems with this guide, but all in all they're just that, minor. No, this guide does not have a built-in Pokedex, they published it before they had the info put together for the Pokedex, and I'm fine with that (see my review of the new Pokedex here on Amazon, it's well worth having too!). And yes, there are some typos, but that's not a big deal.
There is a lot to love about this guide. It has comparison charts for the various types of Pokemon, so you know which type to use when battling. There are pages and pages on everything from TMs to HMs, Berries to Apricorns, the various Pokeball types to the new Mystery Gift items. There's an in-depth section on breeding Pokemon, as well as the newest ways to evolve them (stones versus the happiness factor). There's a great quick and dirty path through the game, which you can check to make sure you didn't miss anything. And best of all, there's a special "sealed" section in the back with spoiler info which you can open or not, depending on whether you're an adult (yes, I know you grownups out there play this game!) or a 6 year-old who needs help through the Tin Tower.
All in all this guide is well worth the money, and if you've got more than one kid playing these games, I'd advise you to get two, to spare yourselves the fighting over it. Don't hesitate, buy it!

Not a bad guide but - no Pokedex?

I have mixed feelings about this Strategy Guide, which I bought as a companion book to Pokemon Gold on the Game Boy. Generally, I think it`s well written and easy to understand, with superb maps which clearly tell you where items are and how to get around in the different cities (which I found really useful, as I`m not very good at navigation in RPGs). It also tells you about the different Gym Leaders and the Elite Four, and what the best Pokemon to use against them are. There is a section on how to breed Pokemon too, plus charts telling you what Pokemon are found in certain areas during the morning, daytime and nighttime and the stages of evolution for a few new Pokemon.
Unfortunately, this book doesn`t really go into detail about where different Pokemon can be found and how to complete your Pokedex. It seems this book was intended just as a walkthrough to help you complete the game quickly, which kind of spoils your fun. If you want help with filling up your Pokedex properly, you have to buy another Prima book, which is advertised in the back.
Overall I`d recommend this book if you`re a novice at the Pokemon games, because the maps and walkthroughs are very good. But sadly, the lack of a proper Pokedex stops the book from being excellent.

some faults but still a good guide

Have being considering for quite some time whether to buy the Brady Games strategy guide instead, due to the attractive shiny Gold/Silver cover ... heard it may be a collector item too.
However, finally decided to pick the Prima one. Reason? ... it is more informative and easy-to-understand after flipping through both the guides.
No doubt, unlike the previous Red/Blue/Yellow guides, Prima fails to consolidate the Pokedex at the back of the book to give a clear-cut listing this time round. Neither does it have a checklist for one to keep track of the Pokemons captured. The Pokedex is actually found throughout the book, making it difficult to refer as and when requires! This feature is similar for the Brady Games one too.
Personally, I like the tables found inside this book. They make it easier to understand certain concepts, eg. there are tables showing the evolution examples (Eevee + Fire Stone = Flareon), breeding examples (Male Pikachu + Female Pikachu = Pichu), and so on.
Moreover, when discussing about an area (eg. Route 30), there is always a table showing the wild pokemons that would appear there at different time of a day (Morning, Day, Nite). This feature does not seem to be found in the Brady Games guide when I glanced through.
Like always, there is a 2-pages rough outlines of what one needs to accomplish at different places and an overview map, serving as quick start tools.
So far the book has being helpful in leading me through the journey, and I am on my way to complete the game.

No more dialysis. No more chemotherapy. No more medicine. This book has changed my life forever.

So many times we try to heal ourselves through other means without ever taking a deep look at what we consume on a daily basis. I for one was so naive to believe that my diet could never be responsible for my sickness. I am 27 years old and in March, I will have been diagnosed with Lupus Nephritis for 13 years now. In December 2014, I hit the lowest point of my health when I had to undergo emergency dialysis and prepare for a kidney transplant, all while doing chemotherapy in the mean time. I was sick and tired of it all: all the drugs (10-15 pills a day), all the chemotherapy (four times a month), and all the doctor's visits and hospital stays. I had been following Kristina for a while on Instagram and had participated in one of her 21-day challenges and I knew that eating fresh, raw, unprocessed, fruits and vegetables are good for you but I was too scared and unwilling to make the jump. With her cheery motivation and upbeat spirit, constantly giving me ideas on how to eat "Fully Raw" meals daily, I took the plunge. As of August 2015, I am vegetarian and I consume 1-2 fully raw meals a day. I told my doctor that I will not be doing chemotherapy anymore and I will not be taking my 13 year long daily drug cocktail. I told my doctor that I want to see if I can eat myself to better health and after almost 6 months of this lifestyle, I have never been healthier and my body is starting to heal itself (the proof is shown in monthly blood work and doctor's visits).

Kristina's lifestyle is not a fad. Eating real fruits and vegetables is something that we should be doing but oh, how we forget to do something as simple as that. I stopped making excuses and started picking up the right things to eat. As a first generation Cambodian-American, my culture's cuisine is riddled with high-salt and fermented (rotten) food. I don't eat those foods anymore but thats alright. In fact, my family have started to adopt some of my eating habits as most of our family all take some form of high blood pressure medicine. Do what the book says. You don't have to go fully raw all day long but start out with one meal (my personal favorite Kristina is your "Love Smoothie" and "Fully Raw Pad Thai"). Instead of reaching out for a box of unhealthy snacks, grab an apple or make some guacamole with dip-able veggies. There are a million ways to eat Fully Raw. Its our job to take care of this body we were given. As a young woman whose life was taken over by a terrible disease at the age of 13, you will never see me go back to the way I once lived. Thank you Kristina. My self and my kidneys are grateful for having discovered and adopting you and your lifestyle.

Real honest review - no vitamix promises here.

I like this book and I like Kristina. I have been following her journey for quite some time now and have progressed in my journey as well going from full blown meat junk eater to now borderline raw vegan. My health has never been better. I even lost 10lbs even though I wasn't trying to lose weight, I have more energy, my digestive issues are gone. This isn't a gimmick people, it's REAL. Real clean food will make you better. However, please note the book itself won't get you these results. YOU have to put in work. Anyway, back to the book: It's a good book so far... perfect for a beginner as she explains in great detail how to change your diet, what tools you need in the kitchen, and she easily breaks down different types of recipes for you. For some who are already on their journey and have a little bit more experience it might be a bit repetitive at first but I mostly bought it for the recipes as I noticed that most of her recipes that used to be on her site for free are now gone, but I understand, it's business. I've cooked a bunch of FullyRaw's recipes over the past year and ALL of them have been a hit and delicious so I'd figure why not have her book as a resource in my kitchen. And no I'm not writing this review to win a Vitamix. I already own a Vitamix. I didn't receive any emails coercing me to write a review. I am writing it from the bottom of my heart to help someone who isn't sure if they should start this journey to wellness or not. Do it. And by the way, cut the girl some slack ... should she have promised gifts for reviews? Probably not. But that doesn't take away from the results people are having on raw vegan diets ... Will her book change your life? Maybe. Will it provide you with a bunch of awesome delicious raw vegan recipes to have at hand whenever you don't feel like being creative yourself? Yes for sure. .

While Kristina's recipes look beautiful and are great at inspiring ones to transition to a Live Foods Diet, promising a Vitamix blender to the person who leaves the best positive review is a very shady practice and makes it hard to gauge which reviews are sincere and which ones are just hyped up because of the incentive. #fullyrawbook
