Paul Tymann is Professor and Chair of the Computer Science Department at Rochester Institute of Technology. His research interests include bioinformatics, operating systems, networking, parallel computing, and object-oriented programming and design.

G. Michael Schneider is a Professor Emeritus of Mathematics and Computer Science at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota and a Visiting Professor of Computer Science at Columbia University in New York. His interests include parallel processing, computer networks, and computer science education. He has written textbooks on software development, data structures, computer organization, and a breadth-first overview of computer science. Schneider was a member of the committee that authored the ACM/IEEE Computing Curriculum 2001. He has received Fulbright Grants to teach computer science curriculum development in Mauritius, Malaysia, Nepal and Mongolia.

This is a down-to-earth and classic textbook on software development via Java as the programming language. Some of us may already had Java programming experience in undergraduate classes therefore this book can serve as the Java programming review. On the other hand we can use this book in conjunction with other already excellent textbooks like "Introduction to Programming in Java" by Robert Sedgewich & Kevin Wayne to begin learning Java in undergraduate classes or to brush up our software development and programming experience. The textbook contains lots of useful illustrations and explanations which do help out a lot while we are exploring the Java programming language and apply it in our software development, and therefore I can go ahead and give this textbook or reference book (depending on what we call it) a five star rating. Book for CS 2110 at UVa

My prof at UVa has us reading an online version of this book which is apparently available. I don't like reading from a computer any longer than I have to (irony) so I ordered it. It's cheaper than most textbooks and is definitely helping with the course. Although, pretty much anything in it can be found with a google search. It goes over more of the process of making code than coding itself. If you go to UVa and are a good student and are reading this, you probably don't need this book. If you sleep in class like I do and don't want to have to try to interpret slideshows, you need this book.

Arguments are presented from the viewpoints of shamans, philosophers, poets, quantum physicists, and novelists. A simple "toy" model of panpsychism is then presented, in which a universal field of proto-consciousness interacts with molecular bonds via the vacuum fluctuation pressure of the Casimir effect. It is shown how this model is in congruence with an anomaly in stellar motions called "Parenago's discontinuity." Cool, redder, less massive stars such as the Sun apparently circle the center of the galaxy faster than their hotter, bluer, more massive sisters. This discontinuity occurs at the point in the stellar distribution where molecules begin to appear in stellar spectra. Observations of main sequence stars out to ~260 light years and giant stars out to >1,000 light years using the ESA Hipparcos space observatory support the reality and nonlocality of Parenago's discontinuity. Local, more conventional explanations for this phenomena are not supported by observations of other galaxies and spiral arms of the Milky Way. If position and kinematics data for ~1 billion stars currently being obtained by the new ESA Gaia space observatory demonstrate that Parenago's discontinuity is a galaxy-wide phenomenon, the hypothesis that anomalistic star motion is due to stellar volition, as described by philosopher/author Olaf Stapledon in his classic novel Star Maker, will be strengthened, as previously discussed by the author in the peer-reviewed journal JBIS.

always good to stay with a classic

This is a book that was recommended by my consultant which had helped her prepare for her Paces exam and I must say this book is highly relevant and has many of the common cases that is considered 'bread and butter' by the RCP.

Each case highlights how to approach the patient in the exam, what kind of questions to ask to obtain a thorough and relevant history and is followed by a list of differentials and investigations required as well as additional questions the examiner may ask at the end of the station.

I understand that there is a newer edition to reflect the recent changes made to the MRCP Paces exam. Have not checked out the new edition yet so I don't know how it fares against this older copy though

communication part is the best. But the History section is not very good general with no specifications
they have a section of previous experiences and stations plus quotations from candidates and examiners

My New Favorite Author

One of the most interesting authors I have stumbled upon in years. I will forge through everyone of his books. I had to take a break from Tracy Kidder's books after reading this one because it gave me so much food for thought. I have not finished digesting his revelations of Paul Farmer. Tracy Kidder finds people that are worth reading about; those with dedication, drive, and the energy to follow through a personal dream. I am hoping to find a book of this caliber about a woman. I don't know if Kidder has written one, but I'm off for the hunt!

Strange Turn

I was interested in the clinic and the troubles abroad, but the romance didn't interest me at all. It felt like halfway through the book we jumped to another person, a rich girl living her own life, and I just couldn't care less. I get that the point is to illustrate the full extent of the doctor's sacrifice - at the expense of his own personal life and love life - but this strange turn was lackluster. After what felt like 80 pages with no hope of release, I put down the book.

The story was good, but Dr Farmer did not engage me. He irritated me.Another socialist who puts down the people and countries which have prospered, but will accept every last penny they can give him. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you!
